Measurement System - Math Chapter-5, Grade 5:

Objectives:
Students will be able to:
  1. Convert rupees into paisa and vice versa.
  2. Perform money related problems.
  3. Convert into different units of time.
  4. Perform real life practices regarding distance.
  5. Convert into different units of weight and volume.
  6. Perform weight and volume related problems.
Outcomes:
Students will have learnt to solve the problems with different units of money, time, distance, weight and capacity.
Materials:
Coins and paper notes, clock, stop watch, calendar, centimetre scale, metre rod, different units of weight, bottle marked with litre and mililitres.
In measurement system, we study about the measurement of money, time, length (distance), weight and capacity and also fundamental operations related to them.

5.1 Measurement of Money/button

In Nepali currency system, money is measured in the form of rupees and paisa. Rupees is the higher unit and the lower unit of money is paisa. We usually use coins and paper notes. The biggest paper note in Nepal is Rs. 1,000 and similarly Re. 1 is the smallest paper note in our country Nepal. Rupees and paisa are denoted by Rs. and P respectively.

5.2 Money Conversion/button

To convert rupees into paisa and paisa in rupees, we should use their relation. We should know the relations of different units of money. To convert rupees into paisa, you need to multiply it by 100. Like, converting Rs. 3 to paisa → 3 x 100 P = 300P. ∴ Rs. 3 = 300 P. Likewise, to convert paisa in rupees you need to divide it by 100. Like, 300 P to rupees → 300/100 = Rs. 3.
Re. 1 = 100p
Always remember, converting biggest to smallest → MULTIPLY. And smallest to biggest → DIVIDE. alert-info

5.3 Operation of Money/button

a. Addition and subtraction of money:

Addition and subtraction of money is similar as that of addition and subtraction of numbers and fractions. Before this operation, we should convert the unit of money into same unit.

Example:
Add: Rs. 8 and 25 p + Rs. 9 and 75 p
Solution:
Rs. 8 and 25 p = Rs. 8.25 [∵ Rs. 8 + 25 p = Rs. 8 + Rs. 25/100 = Rs. 8 + Rs. 0.25 = Rs. 8.25.]
Rs 9 and 75 p = Rs. 9.75 [∵ Rs. 9 + 75 p = Rs. 9 + Rs. 75/100 = Rs. 9 + Rs. 0.75 = Rs. 9.75.]
∴ Adding them = Rs. 8.25 + Rs. 9.75 = Rs. 18.

b. Multiplication and division of money:

We should express the money in rupees in multiplication and division and then multiply or divide. We can perform multiplication and division in the form of decimal or fraction too.

Examples:
1. Multiply: Rs. 6 and 30 p by 5.
Solution:
Rs. 6 and 30 p = Rs. 6.30
Now, Rs. 6.30 x 5 = Rs. 31.5
∴ The product is Rs. 31 and 10 p.

2. Divide: Rs. 20 and 50 p by 4.
Solution:
Rs. 20 and 50 p = Rs.20.50
Now, Rs. 20.50/4 = Rs. 5.12
∴ The product is Rs. 5 and 12 p.

Grade 5: Math Subject-Chapter:5 - Measurement System: Exercise 5.1 (With Solution)/button

1. Convert rupees and paisa into paisa.

a. Rs. 7 and 35 p
Solution:
Rs 7 + 35 p = 7 x 100 p + 35 p = 700 p + 35 p = 735 p.

b. Rs. 13 and 39 p
Solution:
Rs. 13 + 39 p = 13 x 100 p + 39 p = 1300 p + 39 p = 1339 p.

c. Rs. 21 and 63 p
Solution:
Rs. 21 + 63 p = 21 x 100 p + 63 p = 2100 p + 63 p = 2163 p.

d. Rs. 121 and 33 p
Solution:
Rs. 121 + 33 p = 121 x 100 + 33 p = 12100 p + 33 p = 12133 p.

2. Convert rupees and paisa into rupees.

a. Rs. 6 and 25 p
Solution:
Rs. 6 + 25 p = Rs. 6 + Rs. 25/100 = Rs. 6 + Rs. 0.25 = Rs. 6.25.

b. Rs. 13 and 70 p
Solution:
Rs. 13 + 70 p = Rs. 13 + Rs. 70/100 = Rs. 13 + Rs. 0.70 = Rs. 13.70.

c. Rs. 92 and 99 p
Solution:
Rs. 92 + 99 p = Rs. 92 + Rs. 99/100 = Rs. 92 + Rs. 0.99 = Rs. 92.99.

d. Rs. 101 and 33 p
Solution:
Rs. 101 + 33 p = Rs. 101 + Rs. 33/100 = Rs. 101 + Rs. 0.33 = Rs. 101.33.

e. Rs. 999 and 99 p
Solution:
Rs. 999 + 99 p = Rs. 999 + Rs. 99/100 = Rs. 999 + Rs. 0.99 = Rs. 999.99.

3. Add the following sum of money in terms of rupees and paisa.

a. Rs. 16 and 35 p + Rs. 13 and 45 p
Solution:
Rs. 16 and 35 p = Rs.
